The Issue
A leading global manufacturer specialising in stainless steel components, with 90% of its production reliant on this material, required a highly efficient coolant solution. This was particularly critical for their applications in the nuclear industry, where stringent standards such as Rolls Royce Nuclear Approval were mandatory. The company needed a product that would deliver superior heat removal and surface finish, while ensuring compliance with these stringent industry requirements.
The Solution
Certas Lubricant Solutions introduced Castrol Hysol SL 37 XBB a high performance semi synthetic metalworking fluid, as part of an intricate and technically demanding approval process. Starting in February 2023, after evaluating several competing products, the manufacturer found that Castrol Hysol SL 37 XBB excelled in both heat removal and surface finish, making it a suitable candidate for further trials.
The expertise and technical ability of the Certas team played a pivotal role in securing the Rolls Royce Nuclear Approval, which was completed in just five weeks. This swift approval demonstrated not only the quality of the Castrol product but also the team’s deep technical knowledge and rigorous testing procedures.
Following this success, the second phase of trials commenced in June 2023, focusing on testing the coolant on the manufacturer’s two main machine shop floor systems. The trial was carried out meticulously, and by July 2023, the results showed significant improvements in system cleanliness and overall machine performance. These successful outcomes paved the way for finalising negotiations, leading to a full tender agreement by August 2023.
To further support the transition, Certas Lubricant Solutions implemented a free fill initiative in collaboration with Castrol, ensuring that the first coolant fill was provided at no cost. This effort, along with continuous technical support, enabled the manufacturer’s operators to observe enhanced cleanliness and improved overall performance in their machinery.
OUTCOME AND SAVINGS
As a result of the trials and the approval process led by Certas, the global manufacturer adopted Castrol Hysol SL 37 XBB across all 82 of their machine sump systems. This strategic switch not only opened up new opportunities for Certas Lubricant Solutions in the nuclear industry, but also resulted in significant operational efficiencies for the manufacturer.
Certas ensured a smooth and cost-effective transition by providing a detailed lubricant survey and an implementation plan supported by weekly updates. The technical expertise of the team minimized downtime and streamlined the changeover process, reducing overall costs. Monthly reviews and a comprehensive Changeover Report were put in place to ensure ongoing success and long-term benefits from the adoption of Castrol Hysol SL 37 XBB.
